From July 8th to the 12th, children from Gardiner and nearby areas, including Wiscasset, attended Harry Potter's Potions camp at Miss Sugarman's School for Extraordinary Children (SSEC) for the first time. This unique camp was created by Rachel Sugarman, the director of SSEC, who dreamed of offering after-school academic and arts enr
ichment programs for school-age kids. SSEC provides interdisciplinary academic and arts enrichment, including creative problem-solving, talent development, STEAM, and PBL learning activities tailored to the children's interests, strengths, and areas for growth.
During the Harry Potter's Potions camp, children learned about matter, atoms, the elements of the periodic table, density, acids and bases, chemical reactions, and properties of air through science experiments that mimicked the magical potions created at Hogwarts. They also engaged in various activities such as making wands, dragon eggs, and baby Mandrakes, playing ping pong quidditch, having a dragon egg race, designing Harry Potter-themed 3D prints, and collaborating to create a Harry Potter-themed Fan Film.
